The aim of this exercise is to spend time looking back at the work you have made and the artist research that has inspired you so far in this unit. Start to plan your own Personal Drawing Project. Pool together knowledge to extend your own drawing enquiry, by making some small initial drawing studies.  And collect some research on artists who connect to your chosen way of working.

JENNI ROPE

Creates large scale painted canvas’s with hanging sculptures displayed in front.  An interesting sense of depth, layering, and immersion. I am particularly interested in these floating elements, that can act as foreground detail to a piece of 2D work.

EMMA LINDSTROM & NOEL SKRZYPCZAK

Create large scale paint pours.  But extend the process into a very articulate use of the material.  Moving away from the habitual pour and tilt, whereby the paint is doing most of the work.  They create depth through layers and washes, draw with the trails and drips, and manipulates the paint. Working immersively rather than passively.

CAROLINE ACHAINTRE

Achaintre’s work focuses on the duality of pleasant vs sinister, recognisable and abstract. She uses forms from nature and tribal influences to actualise her work.

AIM FOR PERSONAL PROJECT

My intention for this course was to strip down my work and look at the roots and layers of an idea through drawing practice.
With this project I would like to dissect a painting into its constructed parts.  To explore what elements form the art, but also immerse the viewer in an experience.
As Ive progressed through the course Im interested in taking more risks and pushing my work out of conventional boundaries, and experimenting with mixed and alternative media.

The above artists use a variety of techniques and practices to inform and elevate their work.
I am intrigued by pouring paint.  I have evidence that it is a very versatile medium.  It can be mixed with other media to create a diverse range of outcomes.  And has scope for drawing, detail,  large areas, tempo, many outcomes and extensions.
It is complex though, and for a long time I have shied away from practicing with it.

I have been experimenting with conceptual / sculptural elements in my work. Exploring ways to manipulate a drawing or painting. By cutting into it to sculpt the canvas and paper, or layer and collage fragments. In some cases I have added sculptural details to expand the narrative element to the work.

This is an opportunity to take all the elements of the course that have inspired me so far, and apply the drawing knowledge to try to create an unconventional and interesting piece.
The process of experimentation for this project is perfect for this style.  The outcomes and techniques will reveal themselves as I work.
