Make a series of 3 tonal drawings describing the movement of time using an object from around the house or found on a walk. Make the drawings from observation.
You can work with either natural or artificial lighting, but it is important to remember that the aim of this exercise is to chart the passing of time; if your light source is artificial, try to mimic that made by natural light, following a morning, midday and evening cycle.
With these 3 studies I want to address more than the prescribed elements of light effects on a subject.
I felt I had explored the effect of shadow and tonal values on solid forms in P3 EX1, and now I wanted to add further dialogue to my studies.
For a time I couldn’t find a suitable subject. Then I found a dying moth. I tried to resurrect it but it’s time passed and that inspired me further to elevate the idea of “The Passing Of Time”.
I chose to represent the 3 stages – Soft morning light, harsh daylight, evening low light, and also consider the moths life source.
I chose paper and materials to enhance the expression. Worn soft brown paper + charcoal sticks to mimic the gentle morning light. The moth is elusive at this time of day and it’s status was yet unknown.
The bright white cartridge and charcoal pencils for the definition of the day. It was alive but barely moving. Clear and sharp, like a souvenir brought out of it’s naturals habitat to be observed.
I reversed the silhouette for night time. Covering the paper with thick dark charcoal, and erased it’s form from there.
The moth had passed. And so I passed it out of the drawing.
