Thinking about the ethics, politics, psychology and experience of working collaboratively, how would you feel comfortable in working in participation with someone else?
Think creatively and honestly about this and devise a process for yourself that expresses your position on participatory art and working with other people. Perhaps the people will only be involved tangentially? Perhaps they will be people you know very well, or strangers to you? They could even be animals if that is what you feel best frames your ideas.
Opening up to the possibility of interaction helped to consolidate my personal characteristics as an artist. I had preferences and aversions, but having to analyse them and reform them as a set of values to work by strengthened my understanding. From the basis of gathering resources for a drawing, whether that is interacting observationally with a subject, or reaching out externally to collaborative ingredients, it is all a form of dialogue.
My main motivation for interaction with other people would come from the potential benefits of combining other peoples resources to enhance my work. Being able to draw from others experiences and visual reference to create drawings or paintings, involving places Ive never been. Trying to express their experience through my skill set.
The trade being that you can capture a moment for them, or add further agency to their stories through the work.
Exploring interaction with non human sources reveals more unconsidered ways of using the environment. How a journey through the landscape can inform the work rather than just relying on one singular view. How the social, environmental, or political elements can effect the theory and aim of the work.
